I knew a guy who tried to recreate Hennig Brandt's procedure when he was in high school. Because of this, he was ready to be exiled from the neighborhood together with his family because the neighbors protested vehemently because of the unbearable smell.
And he also did other tricks of the same nature: he blew up his balcony when he tried to make nitroglycerin, he greased all the doorknobs in the house with some substance and they turned into powder. The parents had to break down the doors.
He was an eminent student at the Faculty of Chemistry when I met him last time...
