In Greek mythology, he was a successful robber who had the power to metamorphose or make invisible the things he stole. He had his residence on Mount Parnassus and was mentioned in numerous literary works, in the Odyssey, in the legend of the Argonauts and in others. He called himself "the prince of thieves" but his name would translate to "the wolf himself".
